Alabama Zoysiagrass Care: Cultivars & Monthly Calendar

Zoysia can tolerate use yet still be slow to recover once worn down. Plan the lawn around where people actually walk, and match the mowing routine to the cultivar.

START HERE / THE PRACTICAL ANSWER

Three things to know.

Regional fit
Alabama Extension describes zoysia as adapted statewide, with cultivar and site differences still important.
Traffic
Resistance to wear and speed of recovery are different. Zoysia can take time to fill a damaged route.
Repair
Schedule needed repairs with enough active warm growth remaining; protect them from the traffic that caused the damage.

Know your grass and site

Zoysiagrass is a warm-season turf. Leaf texture, growth rate and maintenance needs differ among cultivars, so keep the sod or seed information with your lawn records.

Make the plan fit Alabama

Start the Alabama plan with a use map: gates, play areas, the route to the driveway and shaded edges. Overlay that with a note of the cultivar if known. This separates a care problem from a layout problem. Repeatedly replacing zoysia in the same shortcut may cost more than creating a practical walking surface.

Mowing: check the actual cut

There is no single useful cutting height for every zoysia cultivar and mower. Ask the sod supplier for the cultivar name and its home-lawn guidance, then check the actual result on your lawn. A low display-lawn height may be impractical on uneven ground. Keep a note of missed mowing weeks when investigating a poor finish.

Water: measure before adjusting

Inspect each irrigation zone while it operates. Look for water hitting pavement, obstructed heads and obvious leaks. Record these problems before adjusting runtime, then measure coverage after repairs. Where water stands after rain, investigate drainage separately; a lawn can have both dry edges and a wet low spot.

Avoid an unnecessary treatment

Avoid treating every brown patch as winter injury or every pale patch as a fertilizer shortage. Compare its shape with walking routes, mower passes and sprinkler coverage. If the pattern is spreading beyond those explanations, get a local diagnosis with photographs and treatment dates.

Use the patch diagnosis checklist before choosing a treatment.

Common questions

Does statewide adaptation mean every Alabama yard suits zoysia?

No. Sunlight, drainage, winter exposure, cultivar and expected use still determine whether it fits. A statewide species recommendation is the starting point for a site decision.

Can extra fertilizer make a busy shortcut recover quickly?

It cannot remove the repeated wear. Protect a repair or provide another route, and use a soil-based fertility plan rather than trying to force rapid recovery.

COAST TO COAST GRASSJANUARY - DECEMBER / REUSABLE EACH YEAR

Zoysia Grass in Alabama

Compare coastal exposure with your inland site, and note when this lawn actually resumes growth.

Before you start: Weather overrides the month. Repair during active warmth; reduce work as growth slows. Prepare water equipment before your first local freeze, even if earlier than shown.

  1. January

    Check winter conditions

Protect frosted or saturated turf. Check moisture during extended dry weather.

Check: Cold-weather browning alone is not a call for nitrogen.

  2. February

    Prepare for growth

Match cutting height and repair material to the cultivar.

Check: A warm spell does not prove sustained green-up.

  3. March

    Watch green-up

Compare growth across the lawn. Identify weeds before choosing a control method.

Check: Delay disruptive work while the grass is still dormant.

  4. April

    Match cultivar and mower

Find the cultivar name and check the actual cutting result.

Check: Avoid choosing a low setting by appearance alone.

  5. May

    Plan a warm repair

If growth is vigorous, repair diagnosed bare areas with suitable grass material. Protect establishment.

Check: Confirm the cultivar’s seed, sod or plug requirements.

  6. June

    Protect traffic repairs

Repair during active growth and divert repeated walking routes.

Check: Wear tolerance does not mean rapid recovery.

  7. July

    Watch heat and water

Check rainfall, root moisture and sprinkler coverage. Adjust care to the lawn’s actual response.

Check: Give repairs enough active warm growth to establish.

  8. August

    Leave recovery time

Inspect wear and thinning. Plan remaining repairs only if enough warm growing time remains.

Check: Do not begin major work as growth is shutting down.

  9. September

    Review the use map

Compare repaired areas with the routes still getting daily traffic.

Check: Fix recurring access problems before buying more sod.

  10. October

    Protect the leaf cover

Clear heavy leaves and monitor moisture. Keep traffic off frosted turf where frost occurs.

Check: Brown color may be dormancy; diagnose patches separately.

  11. November

    Adjust to the site

If growth has slowed, reduce inputs. Winterize irrigation where freezing is expected.

Check: In frost-free areas, follow continued growth and rainfall.

  12. December

    Keep a useful record

Record this year’s green-up, repairs and water use. Inspect dry or repeatedly wet areas.

Check: Do not assume every warm-season lawn is dormant now.

Cultivars differ

Match cutting height and repair material to the cultivar.

Give repairs enough active warm growth to establish.

Use current local advice and product labels for treatments. New seed, sod and plugs need establishment care. This is a planning guide, not a monthly application schedule.
