Minnesota lawn care
Minnesota lawn care: find your grass, plan mowing and seasonal repairs, and check watering, soil and local growing conditions before treating a patch.
Choose a Minnesota plan by the grass you have
The three guides below describe different maintenance decisions. Minnesota Extension warns about perennial ryegrass winter hardiness and distinguishes the species within fine fescue mixtures. Identify the seed mixture before choosing a repair; a quick-growing bag is not automatically the best permanent lawn.

Keep cold-season repair and nutrient decisions separate
Dormant seeding intentionally waits for spring germination. Check soil below 40°F, retain spring moisture care and examine herbicide conflicts before choosing this approach. UMN Extension: Dormant seeding, reviewed 2025.
First-establishment permission and an actual phosphorus need are separate questions. A phosphorus-containing starter is not an automatic purchase for every Minnesota repair. Minnesota Revisor: Section 18C.60 phosphorus restrictions.
