Bermuda Grass Care: Cultivars, Repair & State Plans

Identify common or hybrid bermudagrass, choose seed versus sod repairs, and find a state care plan with mowing and watering checks.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE A STATE PLAN

Common or hybrid? Keep the cultivar with the plan.

Bermudagrass spreads through aboveground stolons and underground rhizomes. Its ability to recover in active growth makes it useful in sunny, well-suited sites, but it also means bed edges need attention. A vigorous lawn does not automatically need a golf-course maintenance program.

Repair material
Some common bermudagrasses are sold as seed; many cultivars require vegetative material. A generic seed bag may not match a hybrid lawn.
Mowing equipment
Choose a height for the cultivar and the standard you can maintain. UF/IFAS notes that fine-textured cultivars cut below 1 inch are better suited to a reel mower.
Seasonal color
Cold-weather dormancy and poor shade tolerance are different issues. Inspect a thin, shaded patch before adding nitrogen or increasing every irrigation zone.
