St. Augustine Grass Care: Cultivars, Sod & State Plans
Identify your St. Augustine cultivar, compare mowing and shade needs, and find regional plans for sod, plugs, watering and patch diagnosis.
Save the cultivar name before changing the mower.
St. Augustinegrass is a warm-season grass that spreads through aboveground stolons. In home lawns it is established with sod, plugs or sprigs. A bag of generic lawn seed is not a matching repair method.
- Cultivar
- Mowing needs and shade response vary. UF/IFAS distinguishes standard and dwarf cultivars; a setting suitable for one is not a universal St. Augustine height.
- New sod
- A green surface is not proof of root attachment. Check moisture beneath the sod and rooting before switching to established-lawn watering or putting equipment on it.
- Thin patches
- Shade, wear, irrigation and pests can produce different losses of cover. Repeated traffic is a limitation; a color change alone does not identify a disease.
