Tall Fescue Care: Heat, Repair & State Plans
Plan turf-type tall fescue mowing, summer stress care and gap repairs, with state maintenance guides and soil, watering and diagnosis checks.
Protect existing turf before planning the next reseeding.
Turf-type tall fescue is a cool-season grass with a mainly bunch-forming growth habit. Its ability to tolerate a site is different from the ability of spreading grasses to replace large worn gaps.
- Summer stress
- Clemson’s South Carolina calendar holds back nitrogen during summer and avoids herbicides on heat- or drought-stressed fescue. A weak summer patch is not an automatic feeding instruction.
- Mowing
- Use the local home-lawn range and sharp blades. Frequency follows growth; avoid taking more than one-third of the leaf in a normal mowing.
- Repair
- Thin areas often need reseeding in a favorable establishment window. Check the cause, seed identity and capacity to care for new seedlings before preparing the whole lawn.
