Zoysia Grass Care: Cultivars, Repair & State Plans

The species and cultivar change the repair plan.

Zoysiagrasses spread by stolons and rhizomes, but their texture, winter response and establishment rate differ. Keep the sod invoice or seed label so future repairs can be matched to the permanent lawn.

Seed availability

UF/IFAS identifies Zoysia japonica as the species with commercially available seed. A seeded zoysia is not an interchangeable replacement for every vegetatively established cultivar.

Mowing and growth

Fine-textured and coarse-textured cultivars can need different mowing equipment and settings. Dense cover does not mean recovery from an aggressive operation will be immediate.

Thatch and moisture

Inspect thatch and drainage before selecting equipment or a treatment. A dense, puffy surface and compacted mineral soil are different findings.
