Fine Fescue Care: Species, Shade & State Plans
Compare the five fine fescues, distinguish spreading from bunch growth, and find state lawn-care plans for shade, repairs and lower-input goals.
Fine fescue is a group. Read the species on the tag.
Strong creeping red, slender creeping red, Chewings, hard and sheep fescues share narrow leaves but differ in growth, establishment and site response. The words “fine fescue” do not identify one interchangeable seed.
- Spreading or bunching
- The creeping red types have rhizomes. Chewings, hard and sheep fescues have bunch-type growth, so a bare gap should not be expected to fill in the same way.
- Shade and use
- Shade tolerance does not promise success under dense canopy, in saturated soil or on a repeatedly worn path. Record light, moisture and traffic separately.
- Lower inputs
- Lower fertility and irrigation needs depend on species and the appearance goal. A young repair still needs establishment care; a seed mix sold as low maintenance is not maintenance-free.
